1948–1956: The "Cycling Lion"
Following its formation in 1948, British Railways adopted its first official logo: a lion standing on a spoked wheel. The emblem, designed by Cecil Walter Thomas, is a traditional heraldic motif featuring a lion carrying a spoked railway wheel. Nicknamed the "Cycling Lion" or sometimes the "Lion and Wheel," this logo was used on locomotives and rolling stock. During this period, station signage used a simpler "sausage" logo, an Art Deco-style, tube-shaped sign featuring the words "British Railways" in capital letters.
