​Originally the seat of the Crosslee dynasty, Scaitcliffe Hall can be traced to the middle of the fourteenth century. The Crosslees, local landowners and latterly magistrates, remodeled the hall over five centuries, constructing the present hall in 1821.

Until local re-organisation in 1894 the mill was mainly in Cliviger, just outside the Todmorden boundary.
